Kumar Sanu

Kumar Sanu, also known as Kedarnath Bhattacharya, is a legendary playback singer from West Bengal, India. He started singing in the late 1980s and by the 1990s, he became the undisputed leader of playback singing, ruling the charts with numerous hit songs. Kumar Sanu worked with different music directors to create songs that everyone liked. He has sung more than 25,000 songs in different languages!

Early Life

Kumar Sanu

Kumar Sanu was born on 20 October 1957 in Calcutta, West Bengal, India. His father, Pashupati Bhattacharya, was a vocalist and composer. Originally from Vikrampur near Dhaka (now in Bangladesh), the family later settled in Calcutta for better opportunities. They resided in the Sinthee area, near Biswanath Park, along with Sanu’s elder sister. Specifically, Kumar Sanu lived at Panchanantala on Gopal Bose Lane in the Sinthi area of North Kolkata.

Career

Kumar Sanu began his singing career as Sanu Bhattacharya in 1983. His first big break in Bollywood came with the movie “Hero Hiralal” in 1988. In 1989, Jagjit Singh introduced him to Kalyanji in Mumbai. Following their advice, Sanu changed his name to “Kumar Sanu” in admiration of his icon Kishore Kumar. He moved to Mumbai and got an opportunity to sing in the movie “Jaadugar” under the guidance of Kalyanji-Anandji.

He got his big chance when Gulshan Kumar, along with music composers Nadeem and Shravan, gave him the opportunity to sing most of the songs for the movie “Aashiqui” (1990). These songs were first recorded for an album, but later, were used in the movie. Both the movie and his songs became very popular.

Personal Life

In the 1980s, Sanu married Rita Bhattacharya and they had three children: Jiko, Jassi, and Jaan Kumar Sanu. However, in 1994, they divorced. Later, Kumar Sanu married Saloni Bhattacharya. With Saloni, he has an adoptive daughter named Shannon K and another child named Anna.
