Emma Corrin plays Princess Diana on ‘The Crown’
New episodes of The Crown are on the way which can only mean one thing: new faces. The Crown Season 4 marks the much-anticipated arrival of Princess Diana. The actor who plays Diana had to overcome the pressure of the role before portraying the people’s princess on the TV show.
Corrin joins the cast of The Crown Season 4 portraying Diana in the early days of her relationship with Charles during her transition from shy teen to world-famous royal.
The Crown announced Emma Corrin would be playing Diana in April 2019. A largely unknown actor before landing the part, Corrin attended Cambridge University after which she starred in the film, Pennyworth.
Building up to Diana’s arrival, The Crown Season 3 saw the introduction of Emerald Fennel as Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall. At the time, she went by Camilla Shand. She and Prince Charles (Josh O’Connor) had a relationship but it all changed when Diana arrived on the scene.
In The Crown Season 4, fans can expect to see Corrin play Diana in a number of historic moments. There’s Charles and Diana’s engagement and, of course, their 1981 royal wedding. Corrin wore a stunning replica of Diana’s royal wedding gown for the scene.
Emma Corrin felt a lot of pressure when she got cast as Princess Diana
Corrin spoke with Glass Magazine about playing Diana during a cover interview for their fall issue. As the 24-year-old told the publication, she had to tune out the pressure that came with playing an icon.
“I needed to shut off all the noise that was saying, ‘This is huge. It’s her, how are you going to do this? What will people think?’” she said, according to Instagram.
Preparing for the role, Corrin read biographies on Diana. As previously mentioned, she also worked with a voice and movement coach to get Diana’s mannerisms just right.
Corrin continued, saying it wasn’t the ideal situation for an actor. “It was terrifying and it’s not conducive to good work,” she said.
Britain’s first female Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, played by Gillian Anderson, will make her debut. Oscar-winner Olivia Colman will continue her portrayal of Queen Elizabeth II before Imelda Staunton (Downton Abbey, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix) takes over as the leader of the monarchy in The Crown’s fifth and final season.
