Meghan Markle Annoyed Palace Aides and Was Scolded For Wearing a Certain Necklace From Prince Harry
The book claims that the former Suits star was scolded by palace staffers for wearing a necklace the prince gave to her when they started dating. Read on to find out why royal aides were so frustrated when Meghan wore the piece of jewelry.
Prince Harry and Meghan, Duchess of Sussex officially stepped down as senior royals in March and have been residing in Los Angeles ever since. Now, a new book is putting the spotlight back on what their lives were like in the royal family and what Meghan reportedly had to deal with.
Prince Harry gifted Meghan Markle a special necklace
InStyle reported that after Meghan and Harry got together in 2016, the prince bought her with a gold Maya Brenner asymmetrical letter necklace featuring the initials “M” and “H.” Meghan was photographed by the paparazzi smiling with it around her neck a number of times. But not everyone was thrilled that she was sporting it in public.
Palace aides scolded her for wearing it
People noted that Scobie and Durand detailed what a palace staffer reportedly said about the future duchess donning the jewelry.
In the biography Finding Freedom: Harry and Meghan and the Making of a Modern Royal Family, journalists Omid Scobie and Carolyn Durand claim that palace aides became annoyed that Meghan was wearing the necklace so casually while out and about.
Scobie and Durand wrote that Meghan phoned one of her friends to vent about what the aide told her and said, “I can’t win. They make it like I’m to blame for these pictures, that it looks like I’m encouraging them, that me even acknowledging the cameras may not be sending the right message. I don’t know what to say. It was only yesterday that people online were saying I look miserable in pictures, because I was trying to just ignore the [photographer].”
They claim that “she was advised that wearing such a necklace only served to encourage the photographers to keep pursuing such images — and new headlines.” The authors added that Meghan “said little during the call, choosing instead to simply listen to the counsel. But after hanging up, she felt frustrated and emotional. While she knew the aide had good intentions, the surreal experience of having someone from her boyfriend’s office tell her what kind of jewelry to wear or not to smile at a photographer was too much.”
Did Meghan and Harry contribute to the book?
Because Scobie and Durand are friendly with the Sussexes many royal fans believe that a lot of the information in the book comes directly from Meghan and Harry and will read like their “tell-all.”
The authors added that the now-duchess “felt damned if she did and damned if she didn’t.”
Finding Freedom is slated to be released on Aug. 11.
However, a spokesperson for the couple denied that they had any involvement insisting, “The Duke and Duchess of Sussex were not interviewed and did not contribute…This book is based on the authors’ own experiences as members of the royal press corps and their own independent reporting.”
